How to change settings

Overview:

The Settings folder contains a variety of utilities that give you information about your device and let you configure it. To change the settings, go to the Start >Settings folder and select the item you want to change.

Here's how to do it:

On a touch screen device
The Settings folder on a Pocket PC or Smartphone Professional is divided into three tabs:
  • The Personal tab contains utilities that let you change the owner information and password, and personalize the buttons, menus, input screen, sounds and notifications, and the Today screen.
  • The System tab contains utilities that give you information about the device, including the battery power, memory usage, third-party programs that are installed on the device, programs that are currently running on the device, and more. This tab also lets you change advanced settings, including the brightness of the screen, the time and date of the system clock, the gain of the built-in microphone, the orientation and alignment of the screen, and more.
  • The Connections tab contains setup screens for the various ways of connecting the device to other Windows Mobile devices, PCs, and wired or wireless networks.
On a non-touch screen smartphone
The Settings folder on a smartphone is divided into two or more screens:
  • The first Settings screen contains setup screens for your phone, sounds (ringtones, reminders, etc.), profiles, Home screen, clock, connections, security, and more. At the bottom of the first Settings screen is an entry labeled "More." Select this to go to the second Settings screen.
  • The second Settings screen contains a setup screen for accessibility, owner information, regional settings, system information, and more. Depending on which device you have and the third party programs you have installed, there may be additional Settings screens.

Changing the settings

  • To change the settings, go to the appropriate tab or Settings screen and select the utility you want to use. For example, on a touch screen device you might go to Start >Settings >Personal tab and tap on the Buttons utility to change button assignments (i.e., which button launches which application). On a non-touch screen smartphone, you might go to Start >Settings >Home Screen and change the background image displayed in the Home screen.
  • After you've made your changes, tap on OK (smartphones: Select Done) and they will take effect.

Windows Mobile Tips

1] Select Start> Settings> Personal tab>. Select 'Today', and then select the Items tab. Uncheck the items that you do not want to view on the today screen.

2] Go to Calendar> Settings. In display options, check 'display all day events' to enable display of all the appointments of the current day.

3] Go to Start> Settings> System and select the screen icon. Here select the text size tab and move the slider to the left to decrease the font size. This will enable you to view more stuff on your home screen.

4] If your Windows device has a QWERTY keyboard, some of the keys will have secondary symbols which can be activated by pressing 'Shift' and then the respective key. However, if the desired symbol does not appear with just the shift key, press the 'Fn' key instead.

5] To access the run command box similar to Windows XP, press the center button and simultaneously tap and hold the time display at the top right of the screen. When you release the stylus, a menu will popup with 'Run' option.

6] Don't confuse that box at the top right of the contacts screen as a customized by holding 'ALT' and then 'Find' option ... it's not, it is a 'Filter' and it's blazingly fast even if you have over a thousand contacts in your list. It's limited to just the first and last name of your contact but it will pull up a company if an entry with that does not have anything in the name fields.

7] If you want to remove multiple contacts from your phone, you have to select and delete the contacts individually as multi selection does not work. Instead, sync your contacts with Outlook on your computer, then delete the entries in outlook and resync your PDA. Your contact list will be updated.

8] Go to Start> Settings> System> Screen> Cleartype and select the box that says enable clear type. Click 'Ok' and then restart your PDA to enable cleartype for smooth fonts.

9] To stop all running programs, go to Start> Settings> System, scroll down to memory and then go to running programs and then select 'Stop All.'

10] Do not use the 'Update Library' function in Windows Media Player on your Windows Mobile Device. This will add all sorts of audio files and sound effects to your media library from both your main device and storage card.

Tips on Mobile Maintenance

Looking after your mobile helps to ensure it has a long and productive life. There are 8 easy maintenance tips to help you get the best out of your mobile phone. All of the points below should also apply to your battery, charger and any other accessories.

KEEP YOUR MOBILE:

  1. Charged: Ensure your battery is fully charged, and then completely run it down before recharging. Recharging too early causes your battery to run out of power more quickly.
  2. Secure: For security reasons, enable the PIN on your SIM Card and Phone-lock on your phone to avoid unauthorized used. These security checks will also be activated when the phone is power cycled. You can check with your carrier or the phone manual for the features and also for information on blocking your SIM card and phone IMEI number if the phone is stolen. For more information please see the Security Tips located on the AMTA Lost and Stolen website.
  3. Protected: Make sure you use a keypad lock to lock your phone. Unplanned calls can cost a fortune and even though your phone may be in a safe place, such as in a bag, your phone will still get knocked around to a surprising degree. Rough treatment can damage electronic circuit boards so avoid dropping or unnecessarily shaking your phone.
  4. Battery: Be safe with your batteries. Use only genuine batteries from your phone manufacturer and only buy from authorized dealers. Going for the cheap option of a counterfeit battery can be dangerous.
  5. Clean: Don't use harsh detergents, cleaning solvents or harsh chemicals to clean your phone. Wipe only with a soft cloth.
  6. Covered: a protective cover will help repel dust and dirt, and prevent scratches. Make sure the cover you choose is of good quality. Low quality covers with no air pockets can damage you phone by creating humidity inside the cover.
  7. Storing your phone: Always store your phone in a dry place. Avoid rain, high humidity and liquids. All of these may contain minerals that could corrode the electronic circuits.
  8. At the right temperature: To ensure a long life, keep your phone in a stable temperature. Avoid exposing your phone to liquid and/or exposing your phone to extreme temperature change from hot to cold and vice versa. This might create condensation and damage the phone.
